Thyroid Disorders: A Clinical Guide for Nurses

Description

Thyroid disorders affect an estimated 20 million Americans and represent some of the most frequently encountered, yet most frequently underrecognized, endocrine conditions in clinical nursing practice. Because thyroid hormones influence virtually every organ system in the body, the clinical presentations of thyroid dysfunction are wide-ranging, often nonspecific, and easily attributed to other causes. This course gives nurses a thorough, expertly guided journey through the thyroid from the ground up. Beginning with anatomy, hormone synthesis, and the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, the course builds through the interpretation of thyroid function tests; the clinical recognition and evidence-based management of overt and subclinical hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism; the autoimmune mechanisms underlying Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis; the spectrum of thyroiditis presentations; and the evaluation and management of thyroid nodules and differentiated thyroid cancer, including perioperative nursing care for patients undergoing thyroidectomy. Dedicated modules address the life-threatening thyroid emergencies of thyroid storm and myxedema coma, equipping nurses to recognize these crises and act decisively. Additional content covers thyroid disease in pregnancy, drug-induced thyroid dysfunction from agents including amiodarone and lithium, iodine and radiation-induced disease, nonthyroidal illness syndrome, and infiltrative thyroid disorders. Throughout, evidence-based nursing implications, patient education strategies, and interdisciplinary communication considerations are integrated into the clinical content, preparing nurses at every level to provide safe, individualized, and informed care to this complex patient population.
