What nurses need to know
Florida requires all licensed nurses to complete continuing education every two years as part of their license renewal. RNs and LPNs need 27 contact hours. APRNs need 30 contact hours. Both must include state-mandated topics: 2 hours on prevention of medical errors, 2 hours on Florida laws and rules of nursing, 2 hours on recognizing impairment in the workplace, 1 hour on HIV/AIDS (a one-time requirement unless not yet completed), and 1 hour on human trafficking for nurses who provide direct patient care. Domestic violence education (2 hours) is required once every third renewal cycle, or every six years. APRNs with prescriptive authority must also complete 3 hours on the safe and effective prescribing of controlled substances each renewal cycle. All CE completions are reported through CE Broker. CE Ready is an ANCC-accredited CE provider (P0986) based in Florida offering state-approved CE packages covering all required hours and mandatory topics with automatic CE Broker reporting.
If you’re renewing your Florida nursing license, getting clear on CE requirements from the start saves you from last-minute surprises. The rules are specific — not just how many hours you need, but which topics you must cover and how your completions get reported. This guide walks you through everything the Florida Board of Nursing requires, whether you’re an LPN completing your first renewal or an APRN managing prescriptive authority mandates.
How Many CE Hours Florida Nurses Need
The number of CE hours you need depends on your license type. Here’s the current breakdown from the Florida Board of Nursing:
| License Type | Required CE Hours | Renewal Period |
| LPN | 27 contact hours | Every 2 years |
| RN | 27 contact hours | Every 2 years |
| APRN | 30 contact hours | Every 2 years |
This is a common source of confusion. Some older sources and third-party websites still list 24 hours for Florida RNs and LPNs. That number is outdated. The current requirement is 27 contact hours for RNs and LPNs and 30 for APRNs. If you complete only 24 hours, your renewal application will not be processed.
All CE must come from approved providers. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is the national accreditation body for nursing CE, and ANCC-accredited courses are accepted by the Florida Board without question. Courses can be completed entirely online — there is no requirement for in-person attendance. Your CE hours must be completed within your two-year renewal cycle. Hours do not carry over, and completing extra hours in one period does not reduce what you need in the next.
Florida Mandatory CE Topics
Within your required hours, Florida mandates specific topics. These are not optional extras — they must be included, and they count toward your total hour requirement.
Prevention of Medical Errors — 2 hours: Required every renewal cycle for all license types. The course must be Florida Board-approved or ANCC-accredited and must address patient safety, error identification, root cause analysis, and strategies for preventing errors in clinical settings.
Florida Laws and Rules of Nursing — 2 hours: Covers the Florida Nurse Practice Act, rules of the Florida Board of Nursing, professional boundaries, scope of practice, and legal obligations specific to Florida nursing. Required every renewal cycle.
Recognizing Impairment in the Workplace — 2 hours: Required every renewal cycle. Prepares you to recognize signs of impairment in colleagues, understand your reporting obligations under Florida law, and respond in a way that protects patients while meeting your professional duties.
HIV/AIDS — 1 hour: Generally a one-time requirement. If you completed it during a prior renewal cycle, you do not need to repeat it. If you’ve never completed an HIV/AIDS CE course, it must be included in your current renewal hours.
Human Trafficking — 1 hour: Required every renewal cycle for nurses who provide direct patient care. Florida is a high-risk state for human trafficking. This course focuses on identifying potential victims, trauma-informed communication, and your reporting obligations. Nurses without direct patient contact may be exempt — confirm with the Florida Board if your role is entirely administrative.
Domestic Violence — 2 hours: Required once every third renewal cycle — meaning once every six years. If your current renewal is not the one where it falls due, you don’t need to complete it this cycle. Check your CE Broker history to confirm when you last completed this requirement.
APRN-Specific CE Requirement
If you’re an APRN with prescriptive authority, one additional requirement applies. You must complete 3 hours on the safe and effective prescribing of controlled substances each renewal cycle. These hours count toward your 30-hour total.
Approved courses cover CDC prescribing guidelines, patient risk assessment, prescription drug monitoring programs, opioid stewardship, and documentation standards for controlled substance prescribing. This is the requirement APRN nurses most commonly discover late in the renewal cycle — plan for it early.
APRNs without prescriptive authority are not subject to this requirement but must still complete all other mandatory topics within their 30-hour total.
CE Broker: How Florida Reporting Works
Florida uses CE Broker to track and verify nursing CE completions. When you complete a course from a provider that reports to CE Broker — including CE Ready — your hours are submitted automatically. You don’t have to log them yourself.
Here’s how the process works:
- Complete your CE course through an approved provider.
- The provider reports your completion to CE Broker, typically within 24 to 48 hours.
- Log into your CE Broker account to confirm your hours appear correctly.
- When you submit your renewal through the Florida Department of Health’s MQA Online Services portal, the Board accesses your CE Broker records directly to confirm all requirements are satisfied.
You do not submit CE certificates with your renewal application. Even so, keep them. The Florida Board conducts random audits, and if your license is selected, you’ll need documentation. Store digital and physical copies of every completion certificate for at least four years.
If you complete CE through a provider that doesn’t report to CE Broker, you’ll need to self-report those hours manually in your CE Broker account. Choosing a CE Broker-integrated provider eliminates that step and removes the risk of a reporting gap at renewal time.
When Your Florida License Expires
Florida nursing license renewal runs on a biennial cycle, but your exact expiration date depends on your license type.
LPN licenses expire on July 31 of odd-numbered years. All Florida LPNs share this date, which makes the deadline predictable and easy to plan around.
RN and APRN licenses expire on the last day of your birth month in either an even or odd year, depending on your initial licensure date. Log into your MQA Online Services account to confirm your exact expiration date.
The renewal window opens approximately 90 days before your license expires. You can submit your application as soon as the window opens, but all CE must be complete before you submit. The Florida Department of Health will not process a renewal with incomplete CE. If your license lapses, you cannot legally practice until renewal is complete, and late fees apply. Aim to finish all CE at least 60 days before your expiration date.
How to Choose Approved CE Courses
Not every online CE course meets Florida Board requirements. When evaluating providers, look for these markers:
ANCC accreditation: Courses from ANCC-accredited providers are accepted by the Florida Board without question. Look for the ANCC accreditation statement on the provider’s website and on your certificate. This confirms that the provider — not just the individual course — meets rigorous quality and independence standards.
Florida Board approval: Some courses are separately approved by the Florida Board in addition to ANCC accreditation. This is especially relevant for mandatory topics like medical errors and Florida laws and rules. A provider with both credentials gives you the strongest protection against a rejected course.
CE Broker integration: Choose a provider that reports automatically to CE Broker. This removes one more administrative step from your renewal and creates a verified record your state board can access directly.
Clear course descriptions: Before enrolling, confirm that the course explicitly states which mandatory topic it satisfies and exactly how many contact hours it awards. Vague titles may not satisfy a specific mandatory requirement even if the content seems related.
Transparent bundling: CE packages that include all required hours and mandatory topics at a flat rate are more cost-effective than purchasing individual courses separately. Know what’s included before you commit.
Common Florida CE Mistakes to Avoid
Stopping at 24 hours. This is the most common and most consequential error. The current Florida requirement for RNs and LPNs is 27 contact hours — not 24. Many outdated sources still list 24. If you base your renewal plan on that number, you’ll come up three hours short and your renewal will not go through.
Treating mandatory topics as optional. You can complete 27 hours of elective CE and still fail renewal if you haven’t covered all mandatory topics. Medical errors, Florida laws and rules, and recognizing impairment are required every cycle regardless of how many total hours you log.
Counting employer training without verifying. Annual hospital competency updates, orientation modules, and HIPAA refreshers generally don’t count toward CE unless they’re delivered through an ANCC-accredited or Florida Board-approved provider that awards contact hours and reports to CE Broker. Confirm approval status before counting any employer-provided education.
Forgetting the domestic violence cycle. This 2-hour requirement applies every six years. It’s easy to lose track of when it’s due. Review your CE Broker history to see when you last completed it.
Waiting until the final two weeks. CE Broker can experience processing delays during peak renewal periods, especially in July when LPN licenses expire. Give yourself at least 60 days between completing CE and your expiration date.
Frequently Asked Questions About Florida Nursing CE
How many CE hours do Florida RNs need for renewal?
Florida RNs must complete 27 contact hours of continuing education every two years. This total includes all required mandatory topics. Completing fewer than 27 hours — regardless of which topics are covered — will result in an incomplete renewal.
What are the mandatory CE topics for Florida nurses?
Required topics for RNs and LPNs include prevention of medical errors (2 hours, every cycle), Florida laws and rules of nursing (2 hours, every cycle), recognizing impairment in the workplace (2 hours, every cycle), HIV/AIDS (1 hour, one-time), and human trafficking (1 hour, every cycle for nurses with direct patient contact). Domestic violence education (2 hours) is required once every six years. APRNs with prescriptive authority must also complete 3 hours on safe and effective prescribing of controlled substances.
How does CE Broker work for Florida nurses?
CE Broker is the automated CE tracking system the Florida Board of Nursing uses to verify renewal compliance. Approved providers report your completions directly to CE Broker, typically within 24 to 48 hours. The Board accesses your CE Broker records when you submit your renewal application. You don’t need to submit certificates with your renewal, but keep them for potential audits.
Are online CE courses accepted for Florida nursing license renewal?
Yes. The Florida Board of Nursing accepts online CE from approved providers. There is no requirement for in-person attendance. ANCC-accredited online courses meet Florida’s quality standards and are fully valid for biennial renewal.
What happens if my CE is incomplete when my license expires?
The Florida Department of Health will not renew a license with incomplete CE. If your license expires before you finish requirements, it becomes inactive and you cannot legally practice. Late fees apply. Aim to complete all CE at least a few weeks before your expiration date.
Do extra CE hours roll over to the next renewal period?
No. Florida does not allow CE hours to carry over. Hours completed beyond the current cycle requirement do not apply to the next renewal. Start each two-year period with a fresh plan for meeting your full 27 or 30-hour requirement.
